Word Press Class

I am taking some refresher courses to get the old synapses firing.  Been in kind of a rut lately. Signed on with a Trainer to wake up my dormant muscles.  Did exceeding well on all of the strength tests.  Need to figure out why I am so weary and uninspired.  Hoping these simple steps can get me back on the right path.

Streamlined Digital Media workflow for Print and Video

This requires proper file management, access and sharing. All team members need to collaborate in real time to be efficient. The scope of work for all projects must follow existing work flow and equipment. Outsourced projects and collateral must be accounted for and managed with clear and concise language that all participants can agree to and honor. Understanding the best practices can help move projects quickly utilizing the Agile Methodology while longer term more detailed objects may benefit from a linear approach using the Waterfall Methodology.

Project Management Software utilizes cloud technology for collaboration and work flow optimization. As a subscriber and user of multiple platforms, I know how to leverage the available tools for reporting, planning, auditing and logging of daily activity. This information makes achieving planned goals more realistic by providing metrics and tools that are valuable to a professionally trained user and instructor. As a legacy Mac User and Microsoft Office trainer I have the ability and knowledge to use the complete Adobe product suite as well as the Microsoft Office Suite.

My career in Media, Marketing, Production and Sales all contribute to my overall skill set and bring value and experience to the position. Please let me know how I can help!

This documentary is a great example of the quality programming that Beach TV brought to the Outer Banks.  It was my personal goal to bring network quality documentaries to our viewers.

I have been producing Action Sports Programming since the early 80s.  The original East Coast Motions Series is now available on Amazon Prime.

My Television Series, Eastern Extreme Aired on select cable television networks as well as internationally on Havoc TV Sports.

My new project, Steel City Surfers, The Journey to Gerry chronicles the love and pursuit of surfing on Oceans, Rivers, Lakes and Snow.  The story crosses generations of pure stoke: Jade Vamos in his 40s, Bryan Murray in his 50s and Stephen Yount in his 60s on a journey to visit 70 year old Hawaii Surfing Pioneer, Gerry Lopez at the 2019 Big Wave Challenge at Mt. Bachelor.

The complete  documentary is now available on Amazon Prime.

Discovering the Sony Betacam

In 1993 I had left the Outer Banks and starting Snowboarding.  I borrowed a Sony Betacam and took it to the coast for Hurricane Emily and also to Snowshoe WV to document the emerging sport of snowboarding.  One of my first edits was  “Riders on the Storm”

STORMBUTTON

Discovering the BetaCam Format after shooting 3/4″ Video was amazing. BetacamTechnology had upgraded picture quality and the newer cameras did not need a separate recording unit.  The entire unit weighed in around 20 lbs and retailed for $60,000.  Needless to say most videographers kept them on a Tripod and this limited the type of footage you would see.  I liked to shoulder this beast and carry it around snowboarding.

Couch Level View

So much for the view from 30,000 feet. From where I am sitting it looks like Social Media and Internet TV should be turning the broadcast and cable world on its ear.

Take control of your life by viewing what you want when you want. Find your favorite shows online and enjoy having unlimited online channels and viewing opportunities. Your Cable Provider licenses and sells its programs and content. This makes the selection limited because of this bias. You can move your Internet Connection to the TV and take advantage of a larger, less expensive free market. If you cut the cord from your cable provider you will be in charge of when and where you would like to watch your favorite programs.

Do some online research, that’s what I did:

Roku.com get internet on your TV.

Chromecast Play your tablets and smartphones on your TV.

Subscribe or order TV SHOWS and MOVIES from NETFLIX, AMAZON, ITUNES and HULU.

Find FREE SHOWS! Go to the shows website or Network/Producers Website. YouTube has a free TV Show section.

Here are a couple of articles that I like:

How to find some Internet TV Shows

Gadgets to get Internet on your TV

Boy Scout Snowboard Program

I work as a Snowboard Instructor at the Oglebay Resort in Wheeling WV and at 7 Springs in Champion PA.  This season I got to work with a group of 13 Pittsburgh Area Boy Scouts in Jumperpursuit of their Snow Sports/Snowboarding Merit Badge.  This 5 Week Program was very rewarding  because we got to see these guys progress over a compressed time period.

Steve Draper, Nathan Tedjeske and I got to work hands on to get these guys down the hill in grand style.  We started with the basic elements of riding:  Balance, Edging, Rotation and Pressure.  Using the terrain and specific riding drills these elements were reinforced with Instructor Feed Back and Riding Analysis.

Here is a short ten minute video of our last day:

I took some photos and have them posted on my Public Facebook Page also:

On Location — Chapel Hill NC

Being in the right place at the right time can get you some great subject material.  I used to hitch-hike back1372254077-HitchHiking (1) and forth between Chapel Hill NC and Kill Devil Hills NC during my college years.  One time a guy in an old rusty cadillac picked me up.  His license plate said “Jack and the”  Turned out to be none other than the musician3586584785_9a35d632fd_b featured in this video; “Michael Kelsh”. We struck up a conversation about who we were and what we did.  When it came time for a senior project for school I rang him up and we scheduled the shoot.  Fellow students LeeAnn Woodard and Jim Kinney contributed to the production.  Michael was playing for Southern Culture on the Skids at the time and he invited some of them to appear in the video.  It was fun setting up different scenes all over the area.  When we revealed it in class it became an instant hit.

Promote your Book’s Brand with a Video Book Trailer

I am now producing book trailers to help authors better identify their books.  The premise is simple, we present highlights of the written word in a short inspirational video.  This valuable tool lets consumers get an idea of the book without having to read anything.

BookTrailerTheater

Lets face it, time is our single largest commodity.  Once it is spent you cannot get it back.  The emergence of “E-Publishing” has been a renaissance for writers and has leveled the playing field between publishers and authors.  As an author/writer you can promote and market your book through social media using a book trailer.

Our time is flooded with impressions and advertisements.  Many of us spend time online and are inundated with posts on Facebook, Twitter, Blogs and the like.  A book trailer  can make you stand out from the clutter.

Once you get someone’s attention with your book trailer you must be sure to direct them to your personal website or blog.  This is your turf and it must contain all the information about you, your writing and your publications.

Pay attention to how you post and where you post.  Create your own video site on YouTube, Vimeo or on Facebook.  Embed the book trailer on your blog or website and then post to social media from your website.  That way the source code and digital bread crumbs will lead prospective customers back to your website.

Boneshakers MTV Video Release Party

I shot this video in the fall of 1987 after acquiring my first professional video camera.  The video was edited with Jody and Mike from Atlantic Video Production of Virginia Beach.  Atlantis02This was during the early days of MTV and an up and coming band from Virginia Beach had just released their first MTV Video.   We used a strobe effect on the low-light footage and mixed in a variety of handheld POV Cut-Away Shots.  The music was recorded from a live feed from their audio mixer.

Technology Outpacing Operators

My career spans an interesting time period.  When I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with my degree in RTVMP (Radio, Television and Movie Production) it took an entire tractor cameraMantrailer full of equipment to run a decent production and video cameras still used picture tubes.  I had solid skills on all sides of this.  My first camera was a DXC3000K Manufactured by Sony and was a first generation CCD (charge-coupled device)style camera and my footage looked much better than the network standard at that time.  When computer editing came out in the early 90’s you got a virtual computer based program that mimicked the hardware I was used to using.  This gave me an excellent point of reference to learn and master computer editing and video encoding standards.

Wheeling Skatepark Fund Raising

DEDICATION
The Wheeling Rotary Club Recognized at Wheeling Skate Park Dedication Ceremony

Wheeling City Officials and Wheeling Skate Park Committee Members hosted a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony for the Wheeling Skate DSC01464Park on Sunday, October 21st. The generous support of individuals, businesses, and organizations like the Wheeling Rotary Club helped get the park funded and built.

Wheeling Rotary Club member, Bryan Murray signed on with the Wheeling Skate Park Committee in 2004. This grass-roots group had big dreams and little money for the daunting $330,000 project. Murray approached then Rotary Club President, John Egan McAteer about getting the Rotary Club involved. A committee was formed that included Bryan Murray, Dick Koehler, John Morrsion and John Egan McAteer.

The committee met regularly and worked behind the scenes to get more of the business community in support of the skate park. skatersWelcomedThe Wheeling Rotary Club held a celebrity waiter event, collected donations and used existing club funds to raise money for the project. They were able to double the donation with a matching District Simplified Grant. The funds were donated to the project in 2006 as the Wheeling Rotary Club’s Centenial Project. The Rotary Club’s involvement, city funding and a myriad of other donations helped the Wheeling Skate Park Committee get a subsequent matching federal grant to make the park possible.

Truth in Broadcasting as shown to me by Mark Davis

I moved to Wheeling WV in 1992 and met an old school journalist by the name of Joseph Tarantini.  His ‘on-air’ name was Mark Davis and he had worked at WTRF since the early days of television.PressPass Back then all reporters and announcers with ethnic names would change them to something that sounded mainstream for the time.  He was a treasure trove of information and had been under-utilized by the station.  I worked weekends (the most unpopular shift) with him.  It was great to learn pure journalism and how to report by just the facts.

Over time he and Igarnered some acclaim AP_Thumb and moved onto travel reporting.  We figured it to be a great way to travel on the stations dime, while providing a valuable service. Viewers enjoyed the “Tri-State Travel Series”.  Most destinations were to be reached in one tank of gas.  It was one of my career highlights to win an AP Award for Photojournalism under his tutelage.

Mark passed away in 2011 and I will never forget the valuable skills he taught me.  I will miss his engaging conversations and unbiased view of the world.  Here are a few of the segments we produced in no particular order.  They are all stand alone complete reports.  Just click on the image:

Surfer Magazine Article

My friend photographer Ward Callum and I worked hard to get lots of pictures to submit for this article.   It was published in the December Issue of 1985.  At the time  I was studying Mass Media @ Chapel Hill and this was a good score to account for my missing classes for surfing.

Surfer Magazine  collected photographs from a variety of other sources as well. It was written by Mickey Bednarek of Wave Riding Vehicles.  During this time period the Outer Banks surf scene was very underground and not on the national radar at all.  Mickey does a great job of explaining the pros and cons that the exposure would bring. I was fortunate to have them select a photograph of me as well.

Outer Banks Video Library

Here is a behind the scenes look at a project I did for MTV:

My roots run deep with the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  Over the years I have produced a wide variety of TV Programs and Segments all about the Outer Banks.  If you like the Outer Banks you will like these videos:

This segment aired in an episode of Surfer Video Magazine on ESPN. I shot most of the footage and all of the interviews. Frontline Video and Film produced the series from 1987 to 1991.

This segment was produced for Hatteras Surf Feast and was a compilation of news and surf reports that aired on Beach TV during the late 80s. It has always been my goal to include news style information in all of my surfing segments. This makes for an educational and enjoyable piece.

Hurricane Earl paid a visit to Avalon Pier on Friday September 3rd, 2010. Some of his closest friends came out to see him.

There were over 100 spectators cheering on the brave crew of surfers riding this epic hurricane swell.

Classic Beach TV Footage featuring many of our favorite locals. Its cool to go back inside the Carolinian and the Atlantis.

North Carolina’s Outer Banks got great surf the week before Memorial Day. The local crew and some visiting pro’s “manhandle” a large 3 day swell. The surf was heavy and the wind stayed offshore for great conditions.

Check out the roots of Outer Banks Surfing with this look back to the surf scene its early days. Portions of this segment aired on ESPN’s “Hot Summer Nights” Programming in the 80’s.

This is a compilation of sessions and random encounters with some of my surfing friends. The footage spans from about 2001 to 2006.

North Carolina’s Outer Banks has legendary wind. These Kiteboarders are riding the same air that helped the Wright Brothers invent modern aviation. This area called Buxton Hole or Canadian Hole has an Eastern and Southern Shoreline.

The Flat Duo Jets played at Frat Parties when I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the 80s. They visited the famous Mex-Econo Bar of Kill Devil Hills, NC in 1988.

The footage comes from BEACH TV(1987-1991) and Hatteras Surf Feast(1991).

Mex-Econo served hot dog chimichangos, spam nachos, and Ice Cold Cervaso.
