There is no better way to learn than by doing. I am grateful to my many peers, mentors and instructors who have been kind enough to share their skills and knowledge. Pick up a book or seek out tutorials on subjects you are interested in. Education and Training are the keys to enlightenment.
Doc Couture led the Eastern Surfing Association from 1972 until his death in 1989. He was a tireless advocate of the sport and the Mike Marsh Scholarship Program continues to this day. I was the first recipient of this scholarship and credit Doc for instilling a sense of giving and sharing my love of surfing with others through my media work.
I have worked on all angles of the industry from soup to nuts. This includes Sales and Marketing. Good Product Knowledge leads to successful Marketing and increased Sales.
This Ad ran on the back cover of the Wheeling Chamber of Commerce Directory. I loved buying that Ad Space. Anytime you can appear on the cover of an industrial publication you gain instant credibility. Here are some of the TV Commercials that I have appeared in:
The 1985 Record Bar Pro-Am in Wrightsville Beach NC brought in the world’s best surfers to the East Coast. A nearby tropical storm brought in some great surf and the locals turned out in large number to cheer them on!
This was my senior project at UNC-Chapel Hill. Many thanks to everyone that helped, including Reggie Barnes for letting my TV Production Class run him through some free-style moves at Swain Hall.We coined the phrase “Street-Style” during this production and scored some great footage of the World’s Top Professional Surfers in some East Coast Hurricane Surf. The Wrightsville Beach locals were great help especially the late Ed Mannuel.
Back then there were not too many video camera’s around. I borrowed an industrial grade 1/2″ machine and then dubbed the footage to 3/4″ to edit on the schools old top loaders.
It was cool to meet and hang out with all the surf pros. We got to spend a lot of time with Cheyne Horan, Brad Gerlach and Mark Occhilupo. The soundtrack is original to some musician friends that actually jammed to the footage.

My friend photographer Ward Callum and I worked hard to get lots of pictures to submit for this article. It was published in the December Issue of 1985. At the time I was studying Mass Media @ Chapel Hill and this was a good score to account for my missing classes for surfing.
Surfer Magazine collected photographs from a variety of other sources as well. It was written by Mickey Bednarek of Wave Riding Vehicles. During this time period the Outer Banks surf scene was very underground and not on the national radar at all. Mickey does a great job of explaining the pros and cons that the exposure would bring. I was fortunate to have them select a photograph of me as well.
